American Curl: those ears, though. The “curl” in this American girl’s name refers not to her coat, but to her backward-swooping ears. Interestingly, those cute curlies start out straight and upright—their ears don’t round off until these kittens are almost a month old.
Known as the “Peter Pan of cats” to some, the American Curl is distinct in the minds of cat lovers because of the kitten-like personality that sticks with them throughout their lives. These kitties just never grow up.
This breed can grow to between 5-10 pounds and lives an average of 15-18 years.

BEHAVIOR & TRAINING
WHAT IS THE AMERICAN CURL’S PERSONALITY LIKE?
American Curls are a playful, curious breed. (After all, it’s a great big world, with lots of places to run to.) They want all the people-time they can get and will try to include you in everything they do. These cats often get along well with dogs and they are especially good with children. However, play with younger kids should always be supervised. This breed is loyal and fairly adaptable—she loves spending time with you and trying new things, but won’t cling.
WHAT IS AMERICAN CURL BEHAVIOR LIKE?
One of the more dog-like breeds, American Curls look fancy, but they’re not too proud to beg for your attention. Especially in the morning, when it’s breakfast time. She might even follow you into the shower! An American Curl’s kitten-like outlook on life keeps her bouncing, hopping and playing well into her twilight years, so be prepared to keep her engaged.
HOW CAN I KEEP MY AMERICAN CURL ENTERTAINED?
American Curls don’t have the energy levels of an Abyssinian, but they sure do love to play with you. She might enjoy learning new games, or even playing fetch.
CARE & HEALTH
WHAT DO AMERICAN CURLS LOOK LIKE AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?
American Curls can be short—or long-haired and they come in a variety of color patterns thanks to their domestic shorthair lineage. And those ears, of course, are hard to miss.
Plan to comb your furry friend once or twice a week (depending on the length of her coat) to prevent tangles and mats.
Brushing your fuzzy buddy often helps remove dead skin and loose hairs, as well as shaking debris and dirt loose. Most healthy, grown-up cats won’t need regular baths in addition to their own grooming routines—though if your cat is older, you might want to do some research on helping her keep up appearances.
And remember: even if your cat gets the at-home brush-and-comb treatment regularly, she still might benefit from professional grooming once in awhile.
WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO AMERICAN CURLS HAVE?
This breed is usually healthy. Remember that cats often hide disease symptoms! It’s important to bring your furry friend in for veterinary checkups at least once a year.
ARE AMERICAN CURLS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES?
American Curls aren’t among the breeds generally recommended for allergy sufferers.
Remember that no breed is 100% hypoallergenic, and any breed can aggravate allergies. You can reduce your furry friend’s impact on your allergies with daily brushings. This will reduce pet dander and loose hair floating through the air you breathe and landing on your clothes and furniture. (Bonus: think of the money you’ll save on lint rollers.) If your pet allergies are mild, a regular grooming session could have a big impact on your quality of life with your pet.
WHAT IS MY AMERICAN CURL’S BEST DAY?
This perpetual kitten would love riding around on your shoulders, cuddling “her” kids, and playing silly games with you all day long. Top it off with some catnip, for those that are sensitive to it, and you have a purrr-fect day in the making.
SHOULD I ADOPT AN AMERICAN CURL?
This is a distinctive-looking cat who will also cherish any time you choose to spend with her. She’s playful, joyous, and loving, but won’t smother you with her affections. The American Curl is a great choice for folks who have lots of time to spend with this cuddle-kitty. If you’re looking for a feline companion who’s forever young at heart and unafraid to follow you just about anywhere, the American Curl might be just the cat for you.
