OVERVIEW

Despite their name, Havana Browns are not the cats most likely to be prowling all over Ernest Hemingway's old typewriter down in Florida. Papa did live in Cuba for a while, and he did love his pussycats. But the felines keeping Hemingway's homestead warm are polydactyls—or six-toed kitties—of many different breeds

Havana Browns are from the region now known as Thailand (formerly Siam). Regardless of where they came from though, there's no doubt you'll feel bright and breezy getting to know this rare breed.

This breed can grow to between 6-12 pounds and lives an average of 15-20 years.

BEHAVIOR & TRAINING

WHAT IS THE HAVANA BROWN'S PERSONALITY LIKE?

Havana Browns are very smart, very social, and very solicitous of human attention. This is an agreeable and adaptable breed. They get along especially well with children and dogs compared to other cats. Most Havana Browns thrive in bustling, multi-species homes.

WHAT IS HAVANA BROWN BEHAVIOR LIKE?

If you've ever wanted a lil brown shadow, have we got the cat for you. The Havana Brown wants to be all up in your business as much as felinely possible. Expect her paws to investigate under all closed doors and to boop your nose if she's feeling neglected.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY HAVANA BROWN ENTERTAINED?

Your Havana Brown loves to step and fetch it—whether “it” is a ball or a sock she can carry about in her mouth. Of course, if you don't keep an eye on her, your missing sock is likely to wind up in her bed. Interactive toys and food puzzles will also be a big hit.

CARE & HEALTH

WHAT DO HAVANA BROWNS LOOK LIKE AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?

Havana Browns are brown all over, with striking green eyes. In fact, if you're going to show your Havana, even her whiskers need to be brown! This is just another way Havana Browns are unique—no other breed is required to have a specific color of whisker to compete. Their heads are long and narrow, giving them a distinct look. Their short, glossy coats are relatively easy to keep up.

Your cat's coat and skin can tell you a lot about her health and wellbeing. Healthy cats have coats that are smooth and shiny; they should have supple, clear skin. Nutrition and wellness factor heavily into the texture and luster of your kitty's coat, but you can help keep her looking and feeling her best with regular skin care and grooming. Plan to brush your Havana Brown once a week.

WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO HAVANA BROWNS HAVE?

This breed is generally healthy, though some may be susceptible to urinary tract issues and upper respiratory infection.

Remember that cats often hide disease symptoms! It's important to bring your furry friend in for veterinary checkups at least once a year.

IDEAL FAMILY

ARE HAVANA BROWNS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES?

Havana Browns aren't among the breeds generally recommended for allergy sufferers, though they don't shed much. But shedding less doesn't make this breed hypoallergenic. Dander found in urine, dead skin, and saliva (not pet hair) is what sets off allergy sufferers. Lighter-shedding cats will distribute fewer allergens around your home, though.

Remember that no breed is 100% hypoallergenic, and any breed can aggravate allergies.

WHAT IS MY HAVANA BROWN'S BEST DAY?

This social so-and-so thrives in a busy, multi-pet household. She might start her day by checking for leftover nibbles in the dog's food dish. Then don't be surprised if you wake up to the sound of objects being pushed off shelves because your Havana Brown has decided you've slept quite enough for one night. She'll proceed to happily follow you through the course of your day, helping herself to your lap while you work and to your pillow when you crash. And then you can start all over again tomorrow.

SHOULD I ADOPT A HAVANA BROWN?

These lovable furballs just want to be with you. If you're seeking an affectionate feline friend who's active but not hyper, the Havana Brown might be precisely your cup of tea.
