Catching Goliath Tigerfish

We beached the boat on a huge sandbank and cast into the strong flow, then waited. When the next take came, I shouldered the rod and sprinted up the sand to take all the slack and stretch out of the line. (This was before the days of zero-stretch braid.) The rod went over and stayed over, and my feet felt as if they would ignite on the scorching sand, as I felt an answering surge on the line.

As usual, you’re outside time when a fish is on. Maybe it was five minutes, maybe ten, before it was pulled up onto the sand, and I looked down in disbelief at this alien-like monster.
