Out of the four gorilla subspecies, the eastern lowland gorilla is the largest. However, despite their size, they subsist primarily on fruit and vegetation.
Civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo has affected the species, enabling poachers to kill gorillas. Violence in the country has also prevented researchers from getting a full understanding of how many gorillas are left.
