Scientific Name: Elephas maximus indicus
Status:
Endangered
Number Remaining: 20,000 to 25,000
Average Length: 21 feet
Average Weight: 5 tons

These elephants are smaller than their African cousins. They can produce 220 pounds of dung a day! Only male elephants have tusks.

Since only the male elephants have tusks, they are often poached, causing an uneven sex ratio. They also come into contact with humans due to habitat loss and can destroy a farmer's livelihood in one night. This leads to retaliation by humans.
