Height: 8-10 feet
Weight: 4,400 and 12,000 pounds

The largest and darkest of the Asian elephants, the Sri Lankan elephant was once found throughout the island of Sri Lanka, but is now being pushed into smaller and smaller areas do to increasing human development. Since the 19th century, their population has dropped by 65 percent.

Today, conservation efforts are in full force to protect the species. Under Sri Lankan law, the penalty for killing a Sri Lankan elephant is death.
